What is Vine and How Can it Help Your Business?

In our current Web 2.0 era, it seems that there is always a new app from a brash start-up tech company that will revolutionize communication as we know it. Usually it turns out to be all sizzle and no steak, but it is useful for companies to learn about these services, especially if they can help you connect with new and existing customers.

One such app, Vine, was released last year and soon after was acquired by Twitter. Vine allows users to record and view short (maximum seven seconds) videos with their smartphones, which can then be shared through Twitter and Facebook. Videos are lumped into categories and can be further classified with hashtags, similar to Twitter. Vine offers a number of video effects and video is only recorded when the user is pressing the screen, allowing the user to create edits or stop-motion effects to further customize their videos. Essentially, Vine could be described as Instagram for videos.

So, how does this help your business? Is it worth spending the time to develop content for yet another social network? The answers all come down to your customers and what you and your marketing team feel are the best ways to connect with them. Here a few tips to you get started.

Be dynamic. The most important thing to remember is that Vine is full motion video. Don’t record seven seconds of static, boring, unmoving stuff. Save the stills for Instagram. Use Vine for things that move, things that make noise. Alternatively, use the stop-motion effect to make your products dance around on the floor. The possibilities are endless, just be creative and entertaining and your video will be seen and shared.

Show a scene, not a story. Vine videos play on a loop, similar to animated GIFs. It’s better if your video ends similarly to how it begins. This way, the cut back to the beginning is less jarring and people are more likely to sit through the loop a few times, increasing their exposure to what you are presenting. Vine is no place for epic storytelling.

Take People Behind the Scenes. Many of the more popular videos on Vine are celebrities and brands showing some of the details that their fans don’t get to experience directly, such as rehearsals or on-field practice. You could show your products rolling off the assembly line or your promotional team setting up a booth. The key is to take your customers behind the scenes and show them the interesting aspects of your business they don’t get to usually be involved with.

Above all: Have fun. People use Vine to be entertained, so just keep the mood light and playful and you will create positive associations in people’s minds, which is the first step on the road to revenue. Happy Vining!
